My question is basically, where do I start to research cheap travelling?
I don’t have a lot of money to spend, but know I can get there and around without having to spend and arm and leg OR stay in flea bag motels or dirty hostels.
I don’t need 1st class accomodations, but would still like to be somewhat comfortable. I’d like to do a tour of Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands and England, possibly hitting Switzerland on the way out.
do any of you EXPERIENCED travellers have any ideas on where to start looking for this vacation…do you think it’s doable?

It is possible, but i reccoment ommiting Switzerland, because of its distance from the others. Look at various websites for hotels. You can do everything through the internet. But be warned, different websites may offer different prices for the same place. Also prices in the UK are often twice what you would expect in the US, especially for hotels.

Very doable. To truly get a taste of Europe, don’t miss France & Italy. A tour through Central Europe would be your best bang for the buck.
Here’s the itinerary that I would take (14 to 21 days)
London (arrive)
Paris
Strasbourg
Interlaken (Switzerland)
Venice
Florence/Pissa (Tuscany)
Rome (depart)
Alternatively:
London (Arrive)
Paris
Brussels/Amsterdam
Berlin
Prague
Vienna (Depart)
NOTE: hostels in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Switzerland are spotless, clean, safe, friendly, comfortable. If you are extra-delicate, I would suggest you only pay hotels in Paris and Florence, hostels everywhere else (you’ll have more fun too, as you’ll get to meet people from all over).
PD.- Get a Eurail Pass for 14 days, with it you can travel from anywhere to anywhere any time you want. It includes things like the Romantic Road bus tour, the Rhine River Cruise, the Cat to Normandy, etc, etc……
Most importantly: DON”T RENT A CAR, rail service in Europe is not what we’re used to here in the States. It’s super-clean, super-fast, super-reliable, always on time, super-comfortable, etc…. And rail stations are located in the middle of their downtowns, walking is best.
I’ve been to Europe a dozen times and have tried different approaches, budgets and itineraries. The above is what I would recommend for anyone going there for the first time.
